American Association of Petroleum Geologist (AAPG) and MGS are going to hold a joint workshop <> with the theme of “ Tectonic Evolution of Myanmar and its Basin Development with Special References to its Petroleum Occurrences ” in August 2014.

MGS hosted Thirteenth Region Congress on Geology, Mineral and Energy Resources of South East Asia, in the same venue of GeoMyanmar 2014 on 10th and 11th of March 2014 in Sedona Hotel, Yangon. The congress was attended by about a hundred of international scientists, and two hundreds of local geo-scientists. In the Congress’s dinner, MGS handed over the GEOSEA flag to Indonesia, for being next country to host GEOSEA 14. Representatives from brother organization, Myanmar Geologists Society Singapore (MGSS) also actively participated the occasion. It has been a re-union of geology teachers over the universities of Myanmar, and veterans who worked hardly for development of the science from Ministries of Mines, Energy, and Education etc. MGS’s Tenth Annual General Meeting, and Ceremony for Paying Homage to Elderly Geologists were also held in the same even.

Centennial Ceremony of Prof. ThaHla (1913-2013)

Geology doctrine in Myanmar has been established in colonial period (1923) in the University of Rangoon as Department of Geology and Geography. In 1956, the Department of Geology was formed by Professor ThaHla who became constitutional rector of the university in 1961. For not forgetting his enthusiastic works to produce numerous geoscientists who have been leading the country’s resource industry, hazard assessment, environmental conservation and academic researches, MGS organized the Centennial Ceremony on 16th June 2013 in the University Campus.

Professional Development of MGS

3-month Geotechnical Engineering Course (Level 1) for young geoscientists has been for nearly three years. Ten successive courses have been organized in collaboration with Department of Irrigation (Yangon Head Office). Advanced Surveying Course, jointly conducted with Amigo Survey Company, has also been going on in the same location. Recently, MGS Geotechnical Engineering Committee has been planning to organize Symposium on Geotechnical Engineering in Myanmar in forthcoming months.
